Ethan Rigel is a founding and managing partner of Gore Range Capital. Launched in 2015, the venture capital firm that’s focused on hands-on investing in early-stage skin health businesses has had six exits, 20 investments and its second fund is nearly committed.
As he begins eyeing the firm’s third fund, Ethan spoke on the Smart Business Dealmakers Podcast about the firm’s launch and its early fund experiences, highlighting what’s changed in company types and terms, as well as what being a helpful investor really means. Here’s an excerpt:
“Lots of people can show up with money,” Rigel says. “Lots of people say that they are hands on and helpful investors. And in our first fund, it was very hard to differentiate ourselves from that pool of gray. There are investors that say that they're helpful and hands on, and they really help you figure out that you should have four board meetings a year, and they connect you with who your auditor should be. And that's not how we define how we're helpful.”
